Local moving companies are required to obtain state moving license before engaging in intrastate (local) moving business. Similarly, long distance/out of state moving companies are required to obtain a license from Federal Department of Transportation (DOT).

Insurance
Although in order to get a local or federal moving license moving companies are required to have proper insurance, it is sometimes possible that a moving company does not maintain required cargo insurance coverage once the license is obtained. Therefore, we strongly encourage checking moving companies’ insurance paperwork and making sure it is up to date.

Long distance/out of state carriers are required to provide cargo insurance for $0.60/lb of damaged/missing items. Local moving companies are governed by state laws which differ from state to state. Usually, most of the states require cargo insurance between $0.30-$0.60 per pound.
